UDL & Intersectionality

In my blog post last week, I wrote about a lesson I created called Innovative Learning Experience. My colleagues and I took on the perspectives of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and intersectionality and gave one another feedback on our lessons. My colleagues pointed out ideas that I had never thought of like letting my students create their own VR experience and discussing the gender lens within the Civil Rights Movement. I received helpful feedback that I am going to reflect back on my lesson with.

This week I created a video using Adobe Spark, Universal Design for Learning and Intersectionality. It was my first time using Adobe Spark and I found it really simple and easy to use. I wanted to make something that could explain UDL and intersectionality to my co-workers at school and also share my reflections on both. I wanted to demonstrate how both these ideas go together and intersectionality is Universal Design for Learning.

After reading more about UDL and intersectionality and reflecting, I found that I am often thinking about UDL in my classroom and I try to be proactive with that particular lens. On the other hand, intersectionality is a challenge that I don’t always look at fully. The Khan Academy explains intersectionality as multiple different forms of potential discrimination that can overlap and coexist alongside each other. They go on to say, “We really need to understand when all of these things coexist because if we don't consider all of them at the same time, we really don't get to fully understand the situation” (Vahabzadeh). It is incredibly important to look with this lens all the time in the classroom. I would like to improve on this perspective and really work to understand the issues that involve oppression and issues of power dynamics that surround my students.
