Digital Citizenship

Before this week I did not understand the importance of terms like transformative, copyright, licensing, attribution or creative commons. I had not heard of remix videos, let alone know how to make one. This week my graduate course pushed me out of my comfort zone. I learned what educators and learners are allowed to do under fair use of copyrighted materials laws. Creative Commons “helps you legally share your knowledge and creativity to build a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world” (CC BY 4.0). Media is an amazing tool to enhance, explain, engage and promote deeper understanding, especially in the classroom. However, it is important to remember that these tools must be used in a legal and ethical way. It is equally important to teach our students how to be a good digital citizen.

This week I learned how to make my own remix video. My video discusses attribution and the importance of giving credit when you share, re purpose, or remix other people’s work. I discuss the acronym TASL when remembering how to write attribution. TASL stands for title, author, source and license. This video was difficult for me to make and took many trial runs. Although, through this whole process of making this video, with a tool I had never used before, pushed me and taught me more about video making. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, Learning to make, fail and innovate when you learn from your mistakes or work through the kinks, you are building many skills, but notably, perseverance, learning to design, to make and to innovate. I am excited to continue to work on building my maker skills and equally as important, extending my comfort zone.
