This week I am back again to update you on my progress of baking a cheesecake from scratch for my Networked Learning Project! So far, I have bought all my necessary ingredients and have done lots of research. I have learned about little rules you must follow to get the perfect cheesecake. For example, your ingredients must be at room temperature before you begin and avoid over mixing the filling. Plus, there are many options to choose from when it comes to flavors, crust types, textures, and toppings. I found the recipe that I want to follow on Youtube and I decided to make some minor adjustments for my personal cheesecake. I will be using vanilla extract instead of vanilla bean. Then, instead of a graham cracker crust, I will try an oreo crust. I have found many helpful videos and websites that have helped me work out my questions and decisions. For me, Youtube has been the most helpful, along with help forums.
The first challenge I have come across is if I am going to bake the cheesecake in a water bath in the oven or not. First of all, I don’t have a pan large enough to put my cheesecake pan in with water. Second of all, I don’t have to do it, but it helps prevent cracking in the cake. This help forum website, Help- No water bath, gave me excellent ideas. I decided to fill up one of my baking pans with water to put on the rack below.
In an article by Gee (2018), he explains, “If you want to understand how today’s young people are living and learning online, you need to understand how such affinity spaces function.” Experimenting with help forums, Social Media, Reddit, and other sources have given me some powerful, new learning opportunities that will improve my teaching resources for my students.
SNEAK PEAK!
