In 2017, I began my first year of teaching, out of state, on an island. I didn’t just jump in, I flew, literally. The advice from a mentor stuck with me before I left. She said to find my local go-to people and resources. I came to Hawaii wanting to expand my Professional Learning Network (PLN) as large as possible.
A PLN is a “network you create to learn from and share ideas with others” (Education, 2017). This week I had the opportunity to reflect on my own PLN, then I created my network using Popplet. I realized certain networks are more developed than others and I’d like to expand my networks outside of my school. An article by James Gee explains, “Powerful teaching and learning occur in any number of settings beyond the school, from social networks to informal clubs, political advocacy groups, neighborhood centers, and on and on” (2018).

At my school, I am the only Special Education teacher teaching US History, World History, English 9 and English 10. I quickly began to lean on others for help and expanding my Kalaheo network. My co-workers were willing to share their lessons, activities, and units they created, so I didn’t have to spend hours re-creating. I also had a district mentor who met with me every week to answer my many questions and observe my classes. My first year showed me how important my PLN is. It taught me how being supportive, sharing resources, and collaborating is essential for success. One area I would like to make stronger is my Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program network. It is early in the program, so I haven’t made many connections yet. I am hoping I can grow this section of my professional and personal network through this program.
